CHIMiRA offers consultancy engagements for well-defined problems where specialist mathematical or statistical expertise can deliver a clear result. These are focused, intensive collaborations (one to six months) with a clear deliverable.
How it works
A named researcher leads your project, supported by senior academics from CHIMiRA or, if required, from across the Centre for Mathematical Sciences and the Biostatistics Unit. This means you get dedicated, hands-on expertise backed by the breadth of over 300 world class mathematicians and statisticians.
What you can expect

Is consultancy right for you?
Consultancy works well when you have a specific question or bottleneck and need expert mathematical input to resolve it. If your challenge is broader or more exploratory, a project-based collaboration may be a better fit. However, a focused consultancy project might also be a good way to explore whether a longer-term collaboration would be a good fit.

CHIMiRA's project-based collaborations are partnerships designed around challenges where mathematics and data-driven methodologies can make a transformative difference. These are co-designed engagements, shaped jointly by our researchers and your team, for problems that demand novel or cutting-edge mathematical approaches.
How it works
Projects are built around one or more full-time Research Associates, with oversight and intellectual input from senior academics across DAMTP, DPMMS and the Biostatistics Unit. Because CHIMiRA draws on the collective expertise of over 300 mathematical scientists, we can flexibly assign the right skills as a project evolves.
Collaborations are open to partners from any sector or discipline. There is no requirement to have identified the mathematics needed to address your challenge. Often understanding how mathematics can contribute and what mathematics are needed is the most difficult part of a problem.
What you can expect
- A scoping conversation to understand your challenge and explore how mathematical expertise can contribute.
- A jointly designed project plan setting out objectives, team structure, timeline and milestones.
Is a project-based collaboration right for you?
We look for collaborations where there is a clear pathway to real-world impact, a need for specialist mathematical expertise, and potential for a lasting partnership e.g. through collaborative grant applications. If you have a more tightly defined problem with a specific deliverable or require ownership of IP, our consultancy route may be a better starting point.
