CHIMiRA aims to increase the real-world impact of the Mathematical research from the Centre of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge through

CHIMiRA brings together the collective expertise of over 300 world-leading mathematicians from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS) at the University of Cambridge. Based in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, our mission is to deliver innovative, high-impact research that serves both academic advancement and industry needs.
Academic partners have access to specialised mathematical researchers for research projects through flexible engagement models tailored to your funding structure. These can include both short-term intensive projects and long-term collaborations. It is hoped that successful multi-disciplinary projects would also lead to joint grant applications.
Industry partners can access mathematical researchers for both consultancy and defined project-based collaborations to e.g. generate new solutions to solve industrial bottlenecks, design workflow optimisation strategies. Successful projects may then involve follow-on grant applications (InnovateUK, NIHR, etc.).
- Consultancy engagements, with a clear deliverable, are highly flexible and would typically involve a named researcher and have a duration between one and six months.
- Project-based collaborations, are partnerships between the academic and industrial teams with projects co-designed to achieve the aims of the industry challenge. A project will typically consist of one or more researchers supported with supervision by senior academics.
Is CHIMiRA Right for You? We are an open-house for ideas and consider projects from any academic discipline and industry evaluate potential collaborations based on these principles:
- Is there a clear route to impact from the research?
- Does the project require specialised mathematical expertise beyond a typical postdoctoral position?
- Is there potential for a sustainable partnership through follow-on grant funding and knowledge exchange?
- Does the timeline and scope align with our operational model?
